Punctuation Matters
Summary:
In this activity, the students will be using the letter from the book provided to correct the punctuation that Leigh did not use correctly. The students will be putting commas, periods and apostrophes anywhere that is needed.
Rationale:
I think that this activity is the perfect activity when wanting to highlight on this standard. In the activity the students are doing exactly what the standard says. I think that by having the students add in the missing punctuation they are really getting a sense of how punctuation can change the effect of a sentence. I feel that the students are also doing it in a way that is relevant to them and what they are doing in school at that point.
Common Core Standards:
Level of Bloom's Taxonomy: Synthesis. This activity is at the level of synthesis because the students will be showing their knowledge by rearranging the letter to be written with the correct punctuation. The students will be revising the punctuation that is already there to show more effect when it is being read.

Write Right
Summary:
For this activity, the students will be using the letter that is provided from the book to correct the errors that Leigh has made. The students will be correcting errors such as capitalization, punctuation and spelling.
Rationale:
The biggest reason that I chose to do this activity with my students is because in the beginning of the book when Leigh is younger, he misspells words and uses incorrect punctuation. I wanted to make sure that the students knew that just because it was printed in the book, it does not mean that it was correct. I thought that this standard and activity was a great way to show the students the errors and for them to get practice in using these conventions the right way. Again, this activity is demonstrating exactly what is in the standard.
